Welcome
Mrs. Hedly Grade 1
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year. As your son/daughter’s first grade teacher, I am very excited to be getting to know your child. We will spend a great deal of time on reading, language arts, and math. You will see the skills from these curriculum areas integrated within our science and social studies units. First graders are naturally curious, and inquisitive. You will see great strides in their learning.
I would like to take this opportunity to inform you of some of our daily routines and expectations that I have.
**We are a peanut / tree nut free classroom, please carefully read the labels when giving your child a healthy snack for the classroom. This is only when they are in the classroom.
* Snack...there will be a snack time during the afternoon. Please supply a nutritious snack for your child. Some suggestions are cheese & crackers, fruit, yogurt, and pretzels. We also will only be drinking water at snack time.
*Water bottles...Children may bring water bottles to school and will have access to them at snack time, after recess, and P.E. class. Please make sure it is labeled with their name.
*Take home folders...I recommend checking your child’s folder on a daily basis. This is a great way to stay updated on your child’s homework and any school happenings. There is a monthly calendar on the front of your child’s folder where you can find school events and early release days. On the inside one side is for papers that will stay at home and the other side is where we put the return to school papers.
**Homework...It is very important that your child is doing their homework consistently. It is assigned as a reinforcement to what your child is learning in class. Your child should expect to receive homework Monday through Thursday. They will also be receiving book bags that will be given to them on Friday to be read for the week. Then they will return the book bag the next Friday and choose a new book for the next week. Parents are asked to sign these and write a little message about the book in the bag ie: to hard, to easy, or just right. Book bags will begin Columbus Day week.
**Behavior...Our classroom rules are based on respect for one another. We will be making our classroom rules together and all signing it in the form of a classroom contract. This will all be based on the Responsive classroom approach. You can find an explanation of this on the home page of this website. PATHS will also be incorporated into this and we will have a daily PATHS kid that will receive a compliment list from their peers, which will go home with them and can be brought back to school the next day with a compliment from their family to share with the class.
**Personal Belongings Please mark your child’s name on all personal belongings such as coats, sweaters, hats, lunch boxes, backpacks, smocks, and water bottles.
**Lunch... Lunch will be free again this year. On days that your child is buying lunch, please make sure that you send them in with a snack because we will be having a snack each afternoon.
**Toys...Should remain at home except for playground toys (ie: ball, jump rope). Please remind them if they bring a playground toy to school it is their responsibility to care for his/her toy.
**Communication...I can be reached by email ([email protected]). I check my email every morning and will make every effort to respond promptly. I will also be using the Remind App. Our class name is 1H 2022-2023 Mrs. Hedly. Our class code is 46akfh. I am asking each of you to sign up, it is an easy way for us to have two way communication. You can also call the school and leave a message for me (508-324-3170).
**Most importantly, please find time to read with your child daily. It is one of the most rewarding and beneficial activities you can do with your child in their elementary school years.
It is going to be a great year!
